Questions and Answers About Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF)
  1. How Do I Know If I Have NSF?

The signs of NSF are burning, itching, swelling, hardening and tightening of the skin; red or dark patches on the skin, yellow spots on the whites of the eyes, stiffness in joints with trouble moving or straightening the arms, hands, legs or feet pain; deep pain in the hip bones or ribs, and muscle weakness.  You may have been diagnosed with NSF, or you may only have the symptoms.  If you have only the symptoms, you should consult with your doctor immediately.

  2. How Long After A MRI or MRA Can The Symptoms Appear?

The symptoms may appear as soon as a couple of days, or as long as 18 months after you undergo the MRI or MRA with Gadolinium.  The symptoms may start out mild and develop.

  3. What Is An MRI Or MRA?

These are tests that can be conducted on any part of your body and are used to diagnose conditions of the head, spine, or other areas of the body.  An MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging.  An MRA stands for magnetic resonance arteriogram.  The MRI or MRA does not have to be only for a kidney problem.  You could have had this test for any part of your body.

  4. How Do I Know If My MRI Or MRA Had The Gadolinium?

You would have to get this information from your doctor.  The MRI or MRA may say “with contrast”, which is an indication that a dye was present.

  5. If I Am Concerned, What Should I Do?

You should immediately contact your health care professional.  NSF is a relatively rare condition that occurs only in patients with kidney disease.  You should seek medical treatment immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q:

What does Disability Insurance usually cover?

A:

Disability Insurance is a form of insurance that provides a periodic payment to you if you are disabled as defined in the policy. Most policies require the disability to last at least a certain period, usually called an elimination period, before benefits can begin.
