Actos® Heart Attack Lawyers

Actos® is a drug prescribed to treat Type 2 Diabetes.  It is taken once daily and controls blood sugar levels by increasing the body’s sensitivity to the hormone insulin, which helps cells, use blood sugar for energy.

Actos® and a similar diabetes drug, Avandia®, have been linked to severe, life-threatening heart problems.  According to the American Heart Association, a new study found that Actos® and Avandia® users were at an increased risk of suffering from heart attack, heart failure, and death.

Actos® Users at Increased Cardiovascular Risk

According to a study published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, more than 28,000 diabetes patients were studied over a 33 month period.  The results showed an alarming incidence of heart problems - some of which were fatal - in patients taking Actos®.

The Actos® results were as follows:

  1. 121 patients had a heart attack
  2. 243 suffered heart failure
  3. 18 had both a heart attack and heart failure
  4. 217 died
  5. 599 total incidents of cardiovascular problems or death

 Actos® Not Safer Than Avandia®?

Actos® was initially thought to be safer than Avandia®.  Avandia® came under close scrutiny by the Food and Drug Administration after a study revealed it may increase the risk of heart attack, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and death by 30 to 40 percent compared with other diabetes drugs.  After that study was published, many doctors switched their patients to Actos®.

Now, studies indicate Actos® and Avandia® pose similar, severe health risks to some users.
