A June 8 auto accident caused the death of a 23-year-old man, according to the Louisiana State Police. The Union Parish crash occurred on Louisiana Highway 549 at approximately 9:34 p.m.

Reportedly, the 23-year-old man was driving a 2003 Nissan Maxima in the southbound lanes of Louisiana Highway 549 when he veered over the centerline and entered into oncoming traffic. The Maxima collided head-on with a 2008 GMC truck.

The driver of the Nissan died at the scene of the accident, police said. The driver of the GMC truck, a 32-year-old man, suffered minor injuries in the crash and received treatment at Union General Hospital.

Police indicated that they do not suspect either driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. However, police said that the fatal accident remains under investigation.

Not all accidents are caused by driver error. In fact, the factors contributing to some crashes are entirely outside the drivers’ purview. For example, if LSP investigators were to determine that this particular accident was not caused by driver error, subsequent investigations might ultimately indicate that a defective auto part is to blame for the auto crash.

In that event, the people who suffered damages as a result of the accident may wish to pursue civil action against the manufacturer of the vehicle with the faulty part. Accident victims possess the right to retain a personal injury lawyer and file suit against the party responsible for the accident leading to their injuries. Furthermore, certain family members of people who die in auto accidents may file a wrongful death claim against the responsible party. If successful, these claimants may be awarded restitution for the damages they suffered as a result of the accident.
